States Shipping Coal to Nebraska in 2022

Numbers for 2022 show that 99.9 percent of the coal transported to Nebraska for electricity generation and industrial plants (excluding coke) came from Wyoming. The rest of the coal (0.1 percent) transported to Nebraska came from Colorado. Nearly the entire coal supply for the state was imported domestically by railroad (99.5 percent) while 0.5 percent was imported by truck.

The average price of coal increased 11 cents per million Btu from 2021 to 2022. The industrial sector price increased one cent. The electric power sector price increased 11 cents. The residential sector, the commercial sector, and the transportation sector had no reported prices.

In 2022, coal expenditures in Nebraska were $290.6 million, which was an increase of 12.5 percent from 2021 expenditures. New records had been set each year from 2005 to 2011. Before 2005, the record had been held by the year 1984 when expenditures were $163.3 million.
