The Preventing Outages and Enhancing the Resilience of the Electric Grid/Hazard Hardening program awards grants to prevent outages and enhance the resilience of the electric grid.

NDEE plans to support grid improvement projects that result in a more resilient electrical grid and promote a clean and equitable energy economy. Eligible projects will rebuild and restore infrastructure for transmission and distribution, protect existing equipment from weather-related events, support new adaptive protection technology, and provide recruitment and retention of energy technology workers. Funding must be distributed equitably to Nebraskans, including underserved communities that are more susceptible or vulnerable to electric power outages.
 

Status: Application period open April 30, 2024, through June 21, 2024.

Eligible Applicants

  • Electric Grid Operators, Electricity Storage Operations, Electricity Generators, Transmission Owners and Operators, Electric Distribution Providers, Fuel Suppliers, and Energy Operators.

Nebraska Funding Amount

  • Approx. $5 million each year for 5 years.

Eligible Projects

  • Hardening of power lines, facilities, substations, and other systems
  • Weatherization technologies and equipment
  • Monitoring and control technologies
  • Vegetation and fuel-load management

Milestones/Deadlines

  • NDEE receives the first two grant awards totaling $10.8 million in September 2023. Three more awards of $5.4 million are expected each year for three more years.
  • NDEE accepted project pre-proposals for assessment Dec. 14, 2023, through Jan. 31, 2024.
  • NDEE’s application period runs April 30, 2024, through June 21, 2024.

Program Objectives

  • Support projects that result in a more resilient electrical grid.
  • Promote a clean and equitable energy economy.
