Natural Gas in Storage in Nebraska
The traditional inventory–building season is April to October for natural gas. The volume of working gas in underground storage by November 1 has to meet winter's demands under any circumstance. The volume in storage in August was approximately 84 percent of storage capacity.
In August 2025, Nebraska had the capacity to store 12,653 million cubic feet (mmcf) of working natural gas or working gas, and there was 10,674 mmcf working gas according to the Energy Information Administration estimates. As shown in Figure 1 and the data table below, this volume of working gas was a decrease of 291 mmcf (or 3 percent) from July 2025 and down 2 percent from August 2024. Stocks were higher than the five–year average, equivalent to August 2024's stocks, and at the upper boundary of the five–year range.
