Petroleum Consumption by Product

Petroleum use in Nebraska for 2023 was 45,531 thousand barrels (45.5 million barrels), a decrease of 1.3 percent from 2022. A new record was set in 2019 at 47,566 thousand barrels (47.6 million barrels).

Motor gasoline and distillate fuel (diesel fuel and heating oil) made up nearly equal slices of the pie resulting in 89 percent of the total petroleum products consumed in 2023. Propane made up 5 percent, jet fuel made up 2 percent, asphalt and road oil made up 2 percent, and other petroleum products made up 1 percent consumed in 2023. Each of the other fuels' consumption was less than 1 percent of the pie. (Figure 1)

Figure 1 is a pie graph providing the percentages of petroleum products consumed in Nebraska.

Figure 2 shows, over the last sixty–three years, people have consumed more motor gasoline than any of the other petroleum products, with distillate fuel running a close second. Also, propane consumption was equivalent to distillate fuel consumption in the 1960s.

Figure 1 is an area graph showing the 63-year trend of petroleum products' consumption in Nebraska.
