The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy will present an Air Compliance 101 Webinar on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, 11:00 a.m. This seminar is intended for facilities subject to Air Quality requirements in the State of Nebraska, and will provide beneficial information for environmental professionals and others involved in air quality issues regarding the inspection process, stack testing and online reporting. The seminar is also open to the general public.

The artwork of 13 Nebraska students will be featured in the 2020 “Nebraska: Don’t Waste It!” environmental calendar. The statewide contest is sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (DWEE) and focuses on the importance of waste reduction, recycling and litter cleanup.

DWEE, EPA Joint Inspections – A Thorough and Efficient Process

During joint inspections, members of the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy and members of the Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 can work together to provide a thorough and efficient inspection process.

In May, an DWEE air compliance and inspection specialist participated in an EPA-led inspection at Trenton Agri Products in Trenton, Nebraska. Trenton Agri Products produces ethanol and associated co-products.

DWEE to Provide Rebates for Replacement of 62 School Buses

Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy Director Jim Macy announced the state is awarding over $2.6 million in rebates to schools across Nebraska to aid in the replacement of older diesel school buses. The funded projects include 60 public school districts, one private school, and one bus contractor serving a public school district. Each project will replace one older diesel bus with a new bus with much lower emissions. The department initially planned to fund 32 rebates, but because of the high demand, all 62 applicants will receive funding.

Health Alert Issued for Kirkman’s Cove: Alerts Continue for Rockford Lake, Wagon Train Lake, Willow Creek Reservoir

The state has issued a new health alert for harmful algal blooms, also known as toxic blue-green algae, at Kirkman’s Cove in Richardson County. Alerts continue at Rockford Lake in Gage County, Wagon Train Lake in Lancaster County, and Willow Creek Reservoir in Pierce County.

DWEE Awards $761,545 in Waste Reduction and Recycling Grants

Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy Director Jim Macy announced the department awarded $761,545 in grants to 20 recipients through the Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grant Fund. For 2019, the department received requests for nearly $2.2 million in eligible grant applications.

These awards represent funding for six months. Beginning in 2020, Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants will be awarded on a calendar year, and funding will be for 12 months.

"Top Gun" Blazes the Way for the Petroleum Equipment Reuse Program

One of those trailers has been to five sites to clean up petroleum from leaking underground storage tanks – a new record for trailer reuse sites. This trailer (fondly called the “top gun”) was first purchased in 2007 to clean a site in Burwell. Since then, it has been used in North Bend in 2012, Valley in 2015, Clarks in 2016 and Barneston this summer.

The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy will present a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) reporting webinar from 1 to 2 p.m. CST on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019. This seminar is intended for facilities that have an individual NPDES permit in the State of Nebraska that are required to submit discharge monitoring reports (DMRs). This webinar will cover each part of the reporting process including a permit overview, reading analytical results, determining how and when to report, and finally how to use our electronic system called NetDMR.
