Site Review Committee for Heritage Disposal and Storage Proposal to Meet in Alda on June 21 and June 23

The Heritage Hazardous Waste Site Review Committee, assigned to review and report on a hazardous waste management facility proposed by Heritage Disposal and Storage, has announced two upcoming meetings, to be held June 21 and June 23 in Alda.

The June 21 meeting will begin at 3:45 p.m. at the Alda Community Center. This meeting will consist of a tour of the existing Heritage facility. Meeting participants are required to be at the Alda Community Center to be transported to the Heritage site. All meeting participants will be required to provide identification to Heritage officials upon arriving at the Heritage facility.

The June 23 meeting will be held at 4 p.m. at the Alda Community Center. The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss any issues raised during the June 21 tour, and to examine issues associated with emergency preparedness and transportation. Both meetings are open to the public.

On April 21, 2016, the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) received a Notice of Intent from Heritage Disposal and Storage to locate a hazardous waste incinerator at their current property located at 345 So. 80th Road, Alda. The site is on the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant property west of Grand Island. Heritage intends to install the incinerator to dispose of Department of Defense smoke grenades and related materials.

State laws regarding proposed new hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities require that state and local entities appoint a 12-member Site Review Committee. The Committee will conduct meetings and submit a report to NDEQ before Heritage can submit permit applications to the state.

Notebooks containing information related to the activities of the Committee are available for review at the Grand Island Public Library, 211 N. Washington St., at the NDEQ Grand Island Field Office at 215 Kaufman Ave. Grand Island. Those planning to review materials in the Grand Island Field Office should first contact Nick Weaver at (308) 991-1262. These materials are also available at the NDEQ office in Lincoln at 1200 N St., and on NDEQ’s web site at http://deq.ne.gov/NDEQProg.nsf/OnWeb/Heritage.
