2020 Source Water Protection Grant Project Descriptions
David City – 2021-107881197
PROACTIVE CONTAMINANT SOURCE MANAGEMENT PROJECT
The primary goal of the Project is to identify and protect the groundwater capture area to provide a safe and long-term water supply for the community and update the existing WHP Plan. The City’s actions will go beyond the currently modeled WHP Area by using updated and more robust modeling software and through utilizing updated geologic data to map and assess the aquifer. Furthermore, this project will allow the City to take steps to better understand their source of drinking water by developing an updated WHP Plan, educating and involving stakeholders, and providing an opportunity to decommission private wells and one municipal well.

WAHOO LONG-TERM WATER SUPPLY PROTECTION PROJECT
The primary goal of the Project is for the DOU to enact an WHP Ordinance which allows the City to enforce zoning regulations to protect its water supply. The City will enforce this WHP Ordinance within their ETJ and collaborate with Saunders County to enforce land use controls outside of the City’s ETJ. Furthermore, this planning process will include a hydrogeological analysis to help the DOU better understand its source water aquifer. It will reveal how nitrates move through aquifers, inventory potential contaminants, identify areas that most vulnerable to pollutants, educate and involve stakeholders in identifying measures to reduce the risk of groundwater contamination, map suitable sites for future water supply wells, and decommissioning abandoned wells that, in their current unsealed state, pose a real risk of contaminating the aquifer.
