$2.5 Million Awarded to Recycling, Litter Programs

Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Director Jim Macy has announced the awarding of $2,491,087 in 57 grants for litter cleanup, recycling, and public education programs and activities. Funds for the Litter Reduction and Recycling Grant Program are generated from a fee charged to certain manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers of products that commonly contribute to litter. The program has been providing grants annually since 1979.

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality has announced a public comment period and a public hearing regarding the proposal to renew the operating permit for G&P Development, Inc. Municipal Solid Waste Landfill in Milford. The public comment period is open through May 23, 2017. The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. May 31 at the Milford Webermeier Public Library, 617 2nd Street, Milford.

$1.7 Million Awarded For Tire Collection, Recycling Projects

Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Director Jim Macy announced today that the state is awarding $1.71 million to support 100 tire recycling and cleanup projects across the state.

"The agency received many outstanding applications from across the state,” Macy said. “These funds will provide needed support to local efforts which effectively deal with scrap tires in Nebraska.”

Integrated DHHS Drinking Water, DEQ Wastewater Efforts will Streamline Services to Communities

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services today announced a Memorandum of Agreement to improve coordination of Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act programs. Through the agreement, 24 DHHS staff will move to shared office space with NDEQ wastewater staff effective August 1, 2017, and seven DHHS field staff will begin working with NDEQ field staff.

Governor Pete Ricketts said the agreement is an effective means of ensuring improved services to Nebraska’s communities.

August 8 Hearing on Lincoln Premium Poultry Proposed Air Permit

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality has announced that a public hearing will be held Aug. 8 in Fremont to accept testimony on a proposed air quality construction permit for Lincoln Premium Poultry for a chicken hatchery located at 1015 East Cloverly, a poultry processing plant located at 1325 East Cloverly, and an animal feed mill located at 2045 South Downing, Fremont.

The artwork of 13 Nebraska students will be featured in the 2018 “Nebraska: Don’t Waste It!” environmental calendar. The statewide contest is sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) and focuses on the importance of waste reduction, recycling and litter cleanup.

Public Comment Invited on Nebraska Solvents Cleanup Plan; Hearing Scheduled Feb. 10 in Grand Island

NDEQ has scheduled a Feb. 10 public hearing and is inviting public comment on the proposed Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the former Nebraska Solvents Company site located at 1200 Highway 30 East in Grand Island.

Public hearing: The hearing is scheduled at 7 p.m. February 10 at the Grand Island City Hall, 100 East 1st St. The public is invited to provide testimony on the Remedial Action Plan during the hearing. An informal public information session with NDEQ staff will be held at the same location from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
