Composting is one way Nebraskans can divert organic waste from landfills. This process promotes biodegradation of organic materials like leaves, grass clippings and some food items to create a useful product that makes soil more fertile. Sludge, also referred to as biosolids, from wastewater treatment facilities and livestock waste can also be composted.

All About NDEE: Swimming Pool Program

Summer is underway, and for many, pools can be a place to cool off and have fun. The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) works to ensure those pools are operated safely and that swimmers’ health is protected.

NDEE oversees the state’s Swimming Pool Program, which trains and certifies pool operators, conducts inspections of public swimming pools and reviews and issues construction permits for public pools.

This is intended for anyone interested in learning more about each of the grant categories and who is eligible to apply. Application period runs June 28 through Aug. 9, 2023. Waste Grant Applications Available Online Through Feb. 13

Jan. 4, 2019 – Applications for this round of Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive (WRR) grants are now available online. Applications are being accepted between January 2 and February 13. 2019. NDEQ Amends Its Procedures for After-Hours Phone Notifications

There is a new phone number in effect for reaching the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality after normal business hours, for those who are required to immediately report environmental spills, accidents or potential violations to the Department. The new number for after-hours notifications is (402) 479-4921. This phone number replaces (402) 471-4545.

NDEQ Survey Invites Feedback from Those Who Are Regulated or Seek Assistance

March 7, 2019 -- The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality has developed a short electronic Public Outreach and Program Participation Survey to determine how to best focus the agency’s efforts to “Make Compliance Easy”. This survey has been developed to engage those involved with the agency, including those subject to environmental rules, and those who seek assistance in the form of grants, loans or environmental support.

Well Owner Tips in Case of Flooding

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and Nebraska Department and Health and Human Services remind the public that after a flood, the owners of household wells should take certain precautions to make sure their water is safe and their well is in good operating condition.

An obvious concern is that flood water loaded with bacteria, chemicals or other pollutants may have gotten into the well. A less obvious concern is electrical shock if a non-submersible pump or any part of the well electrical system is flooded.

2019 Flood “Dashboard” Provides Updates of Environmental Issues

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and the Nebraska Energy Office have developed a 2019 flood “dashboard” that provides summaries and updates of ongoing flood-related issues. On the first page, maps provide the status of wastewater facilities, public water systems, waste debris management, and livestock facilities. Text also provides updates on air and energy objectives and status of activities. The second page provides a table and text that provides more detailed county-by-county explanation of areas where there continue to be significant issues.
