Nebraska's Dry Natural Gas Proven Reserves
Energy Page
The estimated quantity of natural gas which geological and engineering data demonstrate with a given probability to be recoverable in the future assuming current costs of operation and market prices are proven reserves.
Natural Gas and Gas Condensate Wells in Nebraska
Energy Page
The number of gas and gas condensate wells in Nebraska peaked at 322 in 2008 and was at its lowest at 11 in 1990.
Additional information can be found in the reports: Nebraska Natural Gas Number of Gas and Gas Condensate Wells and Drilling Permits Issued for Development and Exploratory Wells in Nebraska.
Natural Gas Storage in Nebraska
Energy Page
The traditional inventory–building season is April to October for natural gas. The volume of working gas in underground storage by November 1 has to meet winter's demands under any circumstance. The volume in storage in November was approximately 89 percent of storage capacity.
Natural Gas Production in Nebraska
Energy Page
Natural gas production for 2022 was 320.3 million (0.32 billion) cubic feet, which was a decrease of 0.2 percent from the 2021 production of 326.8 million (0.33 billion) cubic feet. The record high was in the year 1960 when 28.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas was produced.

Residential
In 2021, the number of residential consuming entities (or meters) increased by 10,000 consumers to 553,000; average annual consumption per consumer entity fell two thousand cubic feet to 66 thousand cubic feet; and the average annual residential natural gas bill increased $86 to $633.
The average annual residential natural gas bill set a new record of $922 in 2008 topping the previous records of $870 in 2007 and $854 in 2001.
Compressed Natural Gas Consumption as Vehicle Fuel in Nebraska
Energy Page
Compressed natural gas (CNG) consumption for vehicle use was volatile from January to August, just like in 2023, but leveled out the rest of 2024. Consumption was at the upper boundary or above the five–year range the majority of the time in 2024. Consumption was above the five–year average for eleven months of the year. 2024 consumption mimicked the year 2023 consumption with the exception of February. This is seen in Figure 1.
