Nebraska to be awarded $307 million by EPA, largest ever received by DWEE

LINCOLN, Neb. — Governor Jim Pillen and the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (DWEE) have announced the receipt of a sizeable grant that will help accelerate the state’s realization of value-added agriculture and the bioeconomy initiative. The grant, from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) totals $307 million – the largest federal grant ever awarded to DWEE.

Health Alert issued for Maple Creek Recreation Area Lake

The state has issued a health alert for Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), also known as toxic blue-green algae, at Maple Creek Recreation Area Lake in Colfax County.

Samples taken earlier this week at the lake on alert measure above the threshold of 8 parts per billion (ppb) of total microcystin, which is a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.

All About DWEE: Underground Injection Control

Since 1986, the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (DWEE) has administered the Underground Injection Control (UIC) program to protect groundwater quality in the state of Nebraska.

This program regulates the construction and operation of injection wells and permits the injection of fluid into the subsurface via an injection well.

A fluid is defined as any substance that flows or moves including gases, liquids, or solids. An injection well can be any bored, drilled, driven, or dug excavation with a depth greater than its width.
