Nebraska Real-Time Flood Forecasting (NeRFF) helps to keep Nebraskans Safe

The ability to predict significant flooding events is essential for protecting lives, property, and livestock. In response to this need, the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment (DWEE) launched the Nebraska Real-Time Flood Forecasting (NeRFF) interactive map. This tool empowers state and local officials, as well as private citizens, to anticipate and respond effectively to potential floods.

Developed over two years following the historic floods of 2019, NeRFF currently features potential inundation and depth data for 46 streamgage locations across 54 communities throughout Nebraska. Additionally, the award-winning website, nerff.nebraska.gov, displays current river stages for all active stream gages across the state. Forecasted river stages are also displayed on the map when applicable, supplied by the National Weather Service. The map also includes weather radar, dam and levee information, weather alerts, details on critical infrastructure, and more.

This comprehensive data collection allows communities and individuals to make timely, informed decisions regarding flood risks in real time.

The interactive map is continuously updated, with new data and additional gage sites incorporated as they become available. For further information about NeRFF, please contact one of our floodplain management professionals at 402-471-2186.
