Site Review Committee for Heritage Disposal and Storage Proposal to Meet October 12th in Alda

The Site Review Committee, assigned to review and report on a hazardous waste management facility proposed by Heritage Disposal and Storage, has announced their eighth meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. October 12th at the Alda Community Center. The Committee will discuss major issues, concerns and conclusions related to the Heritage proposal. Unless the Committee elects to extend their work, this will be their final meeting. The meeting is open to the public.

On April 21, 2016, the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) received a Notice of Intent from Heritage Disposal and Storage to locate a hazardous waste incinerator at their current property located at 345 So. 80th Road, Alda. The site is on the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant property west of Grand Island. Heritage intends to install the incinerator to dispose of Department of Defense smoke grenades and related materials.

State laws regarding proposed new hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities require that state and local entities appoint a 12-member Site Review Committee. The Committee will conduct meetings and submit a report to NDEQ before Heritage can submit permit applications to the state.

The Committee will comment on the report compiled by the Nebraska Public Policy Center. The Committee will vote on accepting the report or make recommendations as to possible needed modifications.

Notebooks containing information related to the activities of the Committee are available for review at the Grand Island Public Library, 211 N. Washington St., at the NDEQ Grand Island Field Office at 215 Kaufman Ave. Grand Island. Those planning to review materials in the Grand Island Field Office should first contact Nick Weaver at (308) 991-1262. These materials are also available at the NDEQ office in Lincoln at 1200 N St., and on NDEQ’s web site at http://deq.ne.gov/NDEQProg.nsf/OnWeb/Heritage
