NDEE selects United Way of the Midlands to provide weatherization services in Douglas County

LINCOLN, Neb – Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) has announced it has selected United Way of the Midlands (UWM) to administer the Low-Income Weatherization Assistance Program in Douglas County.

The Weatherization Assistance Program enables low-income individuals and families in Nebraska to reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient. To be eligible, household income must fall below 200%, or double, the federal poverty level.

UWM’s 211 Helpline is now accepting weatherization applications for households in Douglas County. The helpline will also assist with determining eligibility for the program, making it easier for families in need to access this vital service.

NDEE receives federal funding through the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to administer the Weatherization Program. NDEE then allocates those funds to regional nonprofit organizations, which work with individuals and families to in their areas to make weatherization improvements that also increase the safety of the homes.

Earlier this year, NDEE issued a request for proposals to find a weatherization service provider for Douglas County. UWM was selected through this process.

“NDEE is excited to add United Way of the Midlands to the Weatherization network,” NDEE Interim Director Kara Valentine said. “UWM joins a group of deeply committed weatherization professionals who provide an important service to our neighbors in need. With this partnership, eligible Douglas County residents can access this service to save money on their energy bills while also making their homes more comfortable.”

“We are proud to collaborate with NDEE to bring the Weatherization Assistance Program to Douglas County,” said Shawna Forsberg, president and CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “This program not only helps families reduce their energy costs but also creates safer, healthier homes. We encourage eligible households to apply and take advantage of this valuable service.”
