February 2019 Metrics Report
Emerging Risks / Issues:
- NDEQ participated in a Dept. of Agriculture African Swine Fever (ASF) exercise. NDEQ’s role in an ASF incident will primarily involve addressing contamination and waste disposal issues.
- An internal NDEQ Team has been meeting to assess the impact of Perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) contamination. PFAS is a national issue and many states have established regulatory thresholds in absence of federal standards. No significant PFAS contamination has been detected in Nebraska so far; however, on-going investigations focus on Department of Defense sites.
Accomplishments:
- Over 90 land owners and producers attended a public meeting in Wilber to initiate development of a Turkey Creek-Wilber Water Quality Plan. The community-based effort is supported by a USDA National Water Quality Initiative Pilot project in cooperation with NDEQ, Lower Big Blue NRD, Nebraska Extension and the City of Wilber. The plan will provide a coordinated strategy to implement effective land management practices designed to reduce E.coli bacteria and atrazine contamination of Turkey Creek as well as to reduce nitrate contamination of ground water in the wellhead protection areas of Wilber and DeWitt.
Misc. Items of Note:
- Under the provisions of the Volkswagen settlement, NDEQ is required to submit semi-annual reports to the Trustee. NDEQ staff submitted the first report on activities that have occurred to date including those related to the 2017 Clean Diesel Rebate Program, 2018 School Bus Rebate Program, and 2018 Transit Bus Rebate Program. NDEQ was the third state to submit the required report which documents that NDEQ is making judicious use of available funds.
