April 2023 Monthly Metrics

NDEE produces a monthly metrics report to measure what the agency has accomplished; to set annual and longer-term goals; and to examine these goals against accomplishments to ensure continuous process improvements.

Accomplishments

  • NDEE has sent PFAS sampling kits to all community water systems under 3,300 in population so they can voluntarily sample their public water supplies. NDEE is covering the cost of the test and shipping – around $800 per sample – through the federal Public Water System Supervision grant and the State Revolving Fund Program.
  • NDEE’s Air Permitting Team put Sustainable Beef’s air construction permit on public notice April 1, with a public hearing scheduled for May 4 in North Platte.
  • NDEE received the final Superfund State Contract Amendment for the Garvey OU-1 Site in Hastings. The contract documents roles and responsibilities of the EPA and the state, and the amendment reflects the use of nearly $624,000 of Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds at this site between September 2022 and August 2024. The addition of these funds reduces NDEE’s original cost share by $62,360. The Garvey OU-1 site is a grain elevator site that uses a soil vapor extraction system and a groundwater extraction and treatment system to treat carbon tetrachloride in the soil and groundwater.
  • NDEE’s Superfund/VCP Section issued a no further action letter for the Tiny Homes site in Omaha. This site was part of the Voluntary Cleanup Program, and this letter declares that no further remedial action is necessary, and the property is ready for redevelopment and reuse. The project aims to build 50 tiny homes that provide affordable housing for people who were formerly homeless.

Miscellaneous

  • The 2022 Water Quality Integrated Report was put on Public Notice. The Integrated Report provides the general public with a comprehensive summary of the state’s water quality and for water quality management planning purposes, such as implementing future monitoring, developing total maximum daily loads, and implementing best management practices where appropriate.
  • Weekly public lake sampling for harmful algal blooms and bacteria will begin the first week of May. NDEE’s surface water monitoring team and its partners sample 55 beaches at 50 recreational lakes weekly from May through September. NDEE/DHHS issue health alerts when microcystin, a toxin produced by harmful algal blooms, is at levels above 8 parts per billion.
  • NDEE has extended the Private Well Reverse Osmosis Rebate Program. The initial application period closed March 31. NDEE will now accept and review applications on a month-to-month basis until program funding is expended.
